Small Game Hunting For Women & Kids
Small game hunting isn't just for men, anymore. Women and even children are having a ball running through the woods pretending to be Daniel Boone (or is that Danielle Boone?).
Anyway, here are some tips to make sure that trek through the woods ends up as fun as started out.
Prepare. Know where you are going before you start out. Take along maps and a cell phone or GPS to keep from getting lost. And don't forget your license, if needed. Some states require you to complete a hunting safety course before you can obtain a license. Check with your local DNR or Wildlife Commision.
Never go alone, at least on your first trip. An experienced companion can make the trip safer and more fun. It can get kind of lonely out there alone.
Learn how to shoot. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it's amazing how many people think they know all about shooting from watching it on TV. Consider taking a gun training course or asking an experienced friend to teach you. If you don't like handling guns, you can still hunt using a bow and arrow.
Use some common sense with your dress. High heels and Daisy Duke shorts are out of the question. Don't sacrifice comfort for style and leave the make-up at home. You're not trying to impress anyone and the mere scent can drive animals away. Make sure you have a large number of pockets. Wear a long sleeve shirt, tucked in, and tuck you pants into your boots to protect yourself from mosquitoes and ticks. And don't forget a hat and gloves if the weather calls for it.
Ask some men friends to come along with their wives or girlfriends. Sad to say, but there may be men in the woods hunting for something other than animals. A woman alone in the woods may be too much of a temptation for some. Don't risk it.
Take plenty of nonperishable food and water. If staying overnight, you will need some waterproof matches to light a fire at camp. Be aware that you may encounter a large animal, such as a bear, so know what to do should the situation present itself.
Clean up after yourself. The only things you should leave behind are your footprints. Things such as paper wrappers, cigarette butts, matches, etc. should be picked up and disposed of later. This is a simple, but important courtesy for everyone passing through. Don't be a litterbug.
Women who like outdoor activities will love small game hunting. Following these tips can assure enjoyment and security when on a hunting excursion.
